Could the UK actually get colder with global warming?

While most of the world braces for rising temperatures, there’s a scenario where the UK and north-west Europe could instead experience plunging temperatures and freezing winters. Though unlikely, scientists warn that the risk is growing, and the consequences could be severe.

At the heart of this concern is the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a crucial system of ocean currents that transports warm water from the tropics to the North Atlantic. This “conveyor belt” helps keep the UK much warmer than other regions at the same latitude, such as Moscow.

However, climate change could weaken or even collapse the system, disrupting global weather patterns and potentially sending parts of Europe into a deep chill. While uncertainties remain about if or when this could happen, scientists stress that the possibility demands urgent attention.

So, how likely is an AMOC collapse, and what would it mean for Europe and the world? Read More
