Britain’s Net Zero Economy Booms, Growing Three Times Faster Than UK Economy

The UK’s net zero sector is thriving, growing three times faster than the overall economy, according to a new analysis by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI). In 2024, the sector expanded by 10%, generating £83 billion in gross value added (GVA), a measure of economic contribution through goods and services.

The analysis revealed that 22,000 net zero businesses, spanning renewable energy, green finance, and sustainable technology, now employ nearly 1 million full-time workers. These roles come with higher rewards—the average salary in the sector stands at £43,000, which is £5,600 more than the national average.

According to the CBI, these findings prove that economic growth and climate action go hand in hand, enhancing livelihoods and national prosperity. CBI Chief Economist Louise Hellem emphasized the urgency of sustaining momentum: “2025 is the year when the rubber hits the road. Inaction is now costlier than action. You can’t have growth without green.”

This surge in green growth challenges claims from critics like Nigel Farage’s Reform UK, which argues that net zero policies harm the economy. It also contrasts with recent scepticism from the Conservative Party, whose new leader, Kemi Badenoch, called the 2050 net zero target a “mistake.”

However, government officials and industry leaders remain firm. The UK’s Energy Secretary Ed Miliband stated: “These numbers speak for themselves. Net zero is essential to economic growth, energy security, and money in working people’s pockets. It’s the path to good jobs, strong communities, and a resilient economy.”

As the UK pursues its mission to become a clean energy superpower, the booming net zero economy proves that sustainability and prosperity can—and must—go together. Read More
