Global CO₂ Emissions Hit Record High Despite Renewable Boom

In a sobering revelation, the Energy Institute’s latest review shows that global carbon dioxide emissions from the energy sector reached an all-time high in 2024, marking the fourth consecutive year. While renewables, such as wind and solar, surged by 16%, fossil fuel use continued to rise, pushing CO₂ emissions up by 1% to a staggering 40.8 gigatonnes.

Natural gas experienced the sharpest increase, at 2.5%, while coal retained its position as the leading global energy source. The findings highlight a growing paradox: despite record renewable energy deployment, fossil fuel dependence remains entrenched, driven in part by geopolitical instability and concerns over energy security. With 2024 also marking the hottest year on record, breaching the critical 1.5°C threshold, the world is off track in its fight against climate change and running out of time to reverse course.
