Cleaner Energy Cuts UK Emissions by 4% in 2024, Government Reports

The United Kingdom’s territorial carbon emissions dropped by 4% in 2024, marking another step forward in its climate action journey. According to provisional figures released by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), emissions fell to 371 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (MtCO₂e)—down from 385 MtCO₂e in 2023.

This progress puts the UK’s total emissions 54% below 1990 levels, demonstrating the long-term impact of clean energy adoption and industrial decarbonization.

The fall was largely attributed to the reduced use of coal and gas in the power and industrial sectors, signalling continued momentum toward cleaner energy sources.

While the figures were welcomed, environmental groups cautioned against complacency. Doug Parr, Policy Director at Greenpeace UK, acknowledged the positive development but warned that the UK’s heavy reliance on polluting and costly gas remains a challenge.

“Despite falling emissions, we’re still hooked on expensive gas that inflates energy bills and leaves us vulnerable to volatile global markets,” Parr said. “It’s time the government ends the gas trap and scales up renewables to truly future-proof our energy system.”

As climate records continue to be broken worldwide, the UK’s emission reduction efforts remain crucial. Experts emphasize the need to accelerate investment in renewables and energy efficiency to stay on track for net zero—and deliver long-term economic and environmental resilience. Read More
