Global Shipping Breakthrough: Landmark Climate Pact Sealed After a Decade

After nearly a decade of talks, countries have reached a landmark agreement under the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to tackle emissions from the global shipping industry — one of the world’s largest and most challenging polluters.

The newly adopted IMO Framework introduces a carbon pricing mechanism requiring high-emitting ships to pay for their excess pollution. At the same time, mandatory fuel standards will push the industry toward cleaner alternatives. Ships must gradually reduce their greenhouse gas fuel intensity (GFI), with penalties for those that fall short and financial incentives for vessels using near-zero emissions technologies.

This deal, finalised in London at the Marine Environment Protection Committee meeting, sets a clear course for net-zero emissions from global shipping by 2050. Read More
